Insanity Workout Review: Is This Killer Boot Camp Class for You?

Don’t try another boot camp class or HIIT workout until you read this Insanity workout review. I have done Insanity. I even lived to tell about it. And by the end of this article, I’m going to tell you whether or not you should try it too.

But before we get to the Insanity workout review, let me just note a word of caution. This workout is no joke. It’s tough as hell. There’s a good reason that they call it Insanity. It’s nuts! It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.

And while we’re talking about hearts, if you have any health conditions or injuries, please consult your doctor before you try this workout. For reals.

If you are sick of your old boring routine or if you’ve hit a fitness plateau or if you’re training for an obstacle course race or a marathon, then I’m talking to you today.

Now let’s start by taking a closer look at this crazy workout.

First Things First: What Is Insanity?

I can tell you why they call this program Insanity. It’s crazy tough!

Before we get to the Insanity workout review, let’s talk a little about what Insanity is exactly.

Insanity is a 60-day fitness program that is crazy intense. The program uses a series of DVDs to walk you through each workout. Well, the truth is, it’s not so much walking as it is running and jumping and sweating and panting.

The boot camp-style routines are high impact; there’s a whole lot of jumping involved. It’s also a total body workout. Insanity will work your core, arms, legs, glutes, chest, and back. However, it’s more about cardio than it is about muscle building.

One of the things that we love about this workout is that you don’t need any special equipment to do it. You also don’t need an expensive gym membership. You do this workout at home right there in your living room. And all of the strength exercises use just your body weight for resistance.

Insanity boasts that it burns 1,000 calories per hour. People report burning anywhere from 300 to 800 calories. To track exactly how much you’re burning, it’s a good idea to get a heart rate monitor.

While we’re talking about the Insanity workout review, it’s crucial that you know that this program isn’t for everybody. If you are a beginner or if you’re severely out of shape or if you have bad knees, then Insanity probably isn’t for you.

On the other hand, if you’re an athlete or are used to super intense training, then this might be right up your alley. This workout is also an excellent way to train for a marathon or obstacle course race.

Is Insanity a HIIT Workout?

Yes, Insanity is a boot camp-style HIIT workout. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training. It means that you will be doing short segments of cardio, followed by sections of strength training.

This type of workout is extremely popular these days. And with good reason — HIIT workouts are highly effective.

I couldn’t do an Insanity workout review without mentioning some of the benefits that you get from doing a HIIT workout like Insanity. Some of those benefits include:

  • You burn a ton of calories in a short amount of time
  • You increase your metabolic rate for hours after you finish exercising
  • It can help you to lose body fat
  • It helps you gain lean muscle
  • Improves oxygen consumption
  • It reduces your blood pressure and your resting heart rate
  • It can lower blood sugar

How Often Should You Do the Insanity Workout?

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Department of Health and Human Services, adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobics or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobics every week. In addition to that, adults should do resistance training at least twice a week.

The Insanity program will meet both the requirements for cardio and strength training. You should do the Insanity workout five to six times per week. Make sure that you take at least one day for rest and recovery.

How We Reviewed

In this Insanity workout review, we researched and examined professional and consumer reviews for the program. For some comparison, we also took a look at three other similar programs.

And we compared the features of each along with the price. We have no business or financial ties to any of the manufacturers on our list.

The Insanity Workout Review

The Insanity program is a tough-as-nails 60-day workout plan that introduces new videos to your routine every week. The program features 10 different DVDs that you will do 6 days a week. The individual workouts take from 30 to 60 minutes.

In month No. 1 of your training, you will do five total body workouts, including:

  1. Cardio Recovery
  2. Pure Cardio
  3. Fit Test
  4. Plyometric Cardio Circuit
  5. Cardio Power and Resistance

Then, after you complete the first month, you will have a week of recovery that includes a daily balance and core cardio routine. This recovery week slightly eases off the gas. It is certainly less intense than the previous four weeks.

Your recovery week is meant to prepare your body for the even more intense second month ahead.

The four new workouts for your second month include:

  1. Max Interval Plyo
  2. Max Recovery
  3. The Max Interval Circuit
  4. The Max Cardio Conditioning

In addition to those nine workouts, you also get a nutritional guide and a calendar that you can use to track your progress.

On top of that, there are free online support tools that you can use. The base set also comes with free bonus DVDs. In total, the base kit has 14 DVDs.

Beyond the base kit, Insanity also offers several other workout programs including Fast and Furious, Max:30, and Sanity Check.

It will kick your butt, and you will love every minute of it!

Now I’m not just jerking your chain when I tell you that Insanity is intense and even brutal. It truly is crazy hard, even if you’re already in pretty good shape. It’s going to kick your butt.

But as crazy as it sounds, you’re going to love every minute of it. Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with this workout. I hate it while I’m getting my butt kicked. But I love how I feel after I’ve completed it.

Another thing that we really liked about Insanity is that it is affordable.

The best thing that Insanity has going for it is that it actually works. Yes, it’s incredibly difficult, but it also produces real results.

One of the complaints about it is that people unknowingly purchased knock-off DVDs that didn’t work correctly. You can avoid that problem by only buying from reputable sources or the manufacturer, not from third-party sellers.

The best things about Insanity

During our Insanity workout review, we found several things that we loved. First of all, the instructor on the DVDs, Sean T., is incredibly motivating.

Every time that you think you couldn’t possibly do one more squat or jumping jack, he somehow gives you the energy to keep pushing.

On top of that, we love that this workout doesn’t require a gym membership or any expensive equipment. All you need is a little space in front of the TV and a whole lot of determination.

Another surprising thing that we loved about this workout is that it’s actually fun. Sure, it will whip your butt, but in some weird kind of way, you’ll thoroughly enjoy it.

Without a doubt, though, the thing that we love the most about this program is that it really works.

The worst things about Insanity

In our Insanity workout review, we also found a few things that sucked. The first thing that we didn’t like was that the whole program is super high impact.

So if you have any knee, joint, or lower back issues, you’re going to have trouble.

Another thing that we didn’t like was that there was no flexibility work or stretching in this program.

According to Harvard Medical School, adults should do four different types of exercise every week: aerobics, strength training, balance work, and flexibility.

I would add that core work is a fifth essential type of exercise that you should be doing. Insanity meets four of the five requirements.

How Insanity Measures up Against the Competition

In our Insanity workout review, we also took a look at three similar programs for some comparison. Here’s what we thought about RIPT90, Body Beast, and P90X3.


RIPT90 is similar to Insanity, but it goes for 90 days instead of 60. RIPT stands for Resistance Interval Plyometric Training. This program is just as intense as Insanity, but it goes for longer. Like Insanity, RIPT90 comes with 14 killer workouts.

In the Insanity workout review, I talked about how it was primarily cardio. Well, the RIPT90 workout is more about building lean muscle. However, it will still give you plenty of cardio intervals.

Another thing that’s different between Insanity and RIPT90 is that RIPT90 requires weights. If you’ve ever tried the P90X workout, which we’ll talk more about in a minute, most people think that RIPT90 is step up from that.

This program is super intense, but it’s not quite as nuts as Insanity. If you want to increase muscle, you will do better with RIPT90 than Insanity. One of the complaints about it is that people found the DVDs boring. That’s certainly not the case with Insanity.

Beachbody Body Beast

The next program that we looked at in this Insanity workout review is Beachbody’s Body Beast. This is another super intense program that goes for 90 days. Of all of the workouts that we looked at, this one is the best for building muscle mass. Body Beast claims that if you do the program correctly, you can add 10 pounds of muscle in 90 days.

This program uses what they call dynamic set training, which is a specific sequence of reps and sets that recruit more muscle fibers. This type of training also assists your body in testosterone production.

Body Beast separates the workouts into three blocks: Build, Bulk, and Beast. You will do the Build block for three weeks, followed by six weeks of the Bulk block and then finishing with three weeks in the Beast block.

For this program, you will work out for six days every week, taking one day off for rest and recovery.

You will need dumbbells and a bench and barbell for this workout.

Some of the complaints about this program are that people didn’t receive the correct DVDs with their kits. Another complaint that we have about this program is that it doesn’t give you enough cardio. It also doesn’t offer any balance work or stretching.


In this Insanity workout review, we also took a look at the popular P90X3. P90X3 is another intense boot camp-style workout. Like RIPT90, this program goes for 90 days.

You will get plenty of cardio with this program, but you will also build lean muscle. If your main goal is cardio, you would be better off with Insanity.

However, if you want more strength training, you’ll probably like P90X3 better. This base set comes with 16 different 30-minute workouts because they believe that the first 30 minutes of exercise is the most critical part.

And unlike Insanity, you will need some special equipment for this workout. You will need a pull-up bar, weights, and resistance bands.

One complaint about the original P90X was that the workouts were too long. You had to dedicate a lot of time every day to your training. The new P90X3 took care of that problem.

Now you only have to work out for 30 minutes a day. There are no rest days in this program; you will do it every day for three months.

A Final Thought on the Insanity Workout Review

Okay, here’s the bottom line. If you’re asking me whether or not you should try the Insanity workout, my answer would be that it depends on your current fitness level.

If you are a beginner or have any health conditions or injuries, then Insanity is not for you. I also wouldn’t recommend it if you are very out of shape.

In fact, I don’t recommend any of the programs that we looked at in our Insanity workout review today for beginners.

On the flip side, if you’re an athlete or regularly exercise at a super high level, then you are going to love this workout. There is no question that Insanity is effective. If you stick with it and eat clean, you will see results.

Another thing to consider when you’re trying to decide whether or not to try Insanity is your goal. What are you trying to achieve? If you’re looking for a lot of cardio and some muscle toning, then go for it.

However, if you’re mainly looking to increase your strength and lean muscle, I would recommend RIPT90 instead.
